I'm an engineer. That fact doesn't define me entirely, but it shapes the way I see and interact with the world. It also means I like keeping things organized, I own a lot of khaki pants, and yes, I have a favorite type of graph paper. Doesn't everyone? For over twenty years my career has been as a forensic structural engineer—and that has led me to investigate damage related to fires, floods, tornados, and structural collapses. It's challenging, but rewarding work, and it puts me in a lot of interesting places.
I'm a father. Despite my technical tendencies and unique career, my heart and my greatest adventures reside with my family. After college, my wife and I spent a decade between Chicago and Grand Rapids, until we returned to our hometown of Grand Haven where we've raised our three kids near the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. When I'm not cheering the kids at sporting events or recording their band and orchestra concerts, you can find me chasing flat water on my slalom ski, seeking powder, moguls, and glades in the mountains, running along the lake, or leading worship at my church.
I'm an author. This is a new posture for me, but I've always dreamt of writing a book. While I've written plenty of technical articles and papers, there has never been anything quite like this. Never anything so raw, so vulnerable, and so personal. I knew it was there inside of me all of these years, ready to come out, but it wasn't until I started writing that I realized just how much I had to say. More Info
